PRT’s contractor began milling operations in preparation for paving at several locations in Uptown this week.

Milling operations will occur Monday through Saturday from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m.

On Forbes Avenue, milling will be performed on the left (north) lane from Shingiss Street to Pride Street and both sides of the roadway from Jumonville Street to the Birmingham Bridge.

On Fifth Avenue, milling will occur between Craft Avenue and Kirkpatrick Street, on both sides of the roadway from Diamond Street to Sixth Avenue, and on Sixth Avenue from Fifth Avenue to Forbes Avenue.

Paving will take place on the north side of Forbes Avenue from Shingiss Street to McAnulty Street later next week. Additional paving is planned to occur before the end of the month. Announcements will be made as dates are finalized.

Drivers should expect temporary closures at intersections in all work zones while crews move milling and paving equipment through the area. Parking will be restricted in the work zones and at nearby intersections. Motorists should be on the lookout for signage when parking in the area.

The work is weather dependent and is expected to last through the end of the month.

Streetlights, decorative lighting, and traffic signals are being installed throughout Uptown and Oakland as part of the University Line project.

There are two different types of streetlights being installed – teardrop luminaries and roadway luminaries. There will be 46 teardrop luminaries of which 30 have been installed and 36 of the larger roadway lights of which 14 have been installed to date.

The decorative lighting with acorn shaped tops (like the one pictured above), will be featured along sidewalks in Uptown. There will be a total of 12 lights installed of which eight have already been placed.

Thirty-one intersections will receive new signal poles and traffic lights.

A Flock of PittsBirds Has Landed Along the University Line

Grab those binoculars and go bird watching along the University Line!

The City of Pittsburgh, in partnership with PRT, Shiftworks Community + Public Art has launched a new public art project.

Designed along PRT’s new University Line, PittsBirds is a series of 20 bird-inspired artwork installations that create a visual thread through the corridor. The artwork will encourage transit riders, pedestrians, cyclists, workers, and residents to seek out the individual birds and experience the corridor in a new way.

"We’re excited to integrate public art along the University Line and can’t wait to see Pittsburghers discover new art on their daily commutes,” said Maria Cadena, Public Art Planner with the City of Pittsburgh Department of City Planning. “Whether you’re biking, walking, or riding the bus, we encourage everyone to explore the pieces and find your favorite bird.”

Marsha Rollinger, a Pittsburgh-area native, was selected as the artist for the public art project based on her use of bold colors and layered imagery. For PittsBirds, her work reflects the distinct character and stories of the communities along the University Line.

“I grew up in the Pittsburgh area and it was exciting to learn so much more about the Downtown, Uptown, Hill District, and Oakland neighborhoods from all of the wonderful people who shared stories and gave input for this project through the online survey, in-person meetings, and community events," Marsha said. " PittsBirds is truly a community-driven art project. I hope the public enjoys seeking out all twenty of the bird artworks and learning the stories they have to tell.”

PRT continues to work closely with stakeholders including community groups,

universities, businesses, and other impacted groups during construction.

PRTX stations will have new shelters with upgraded amenities, including next-bus arrival screens, fare vending machines, seating, lighting, emergency phones and security cameras.

Thank you for your continued support of this project.
