Pittsburgh Regional Transit is Gearing Up for Construction of The University Line

On June 16, 2023, Pittsburgh Regional Transit issued a “notice to proceed” to Independence Excavating, Inc. from Independence Ohio for the construction of Phase I of the University Line also known as the Downtown Loop.

The University Line encompasses the first and second phases of the BRT Project over the next three years.  

The Downtown-Uptown-Oakland BRT Line Earns a New Name: "The University Line"

Following the announcement of Pittsburgh Regional Transit's $150 million grant agreement with the Federal Transit Administration, the Downtown-Uptown-Oakland BRT line will now be named The University Line. This new line is the first under a new level of service called PRTX.

Pittsburgh Regional Transit has executed a grant agreement with the Federal Transit Administration (FTA), the final step of securing all federal funding for the Downtown-Uptown-Oakland Bus Rapid Transit project. The FTA announced in 2020 it would allocate the funding for the project, and has since then developed, reviewed, and approved the grant that was awarded today.

PRT Board Approves Construction Bid, Route Changes to Advance Bus Rapid Transit Plan

On Friday, March 24, the Pittsburgh Regional Transit (PRT) board approved a $27.8 million contract with Independence Excavating, Inc., for the first phase of its Bus Rapid Transit project (BRT). The project will operate in dedicated bus-only lanes in downtown Pittsburgh, Uptown and Oakland. This project is expected to improve transit amenities, foster more reliable service and create development opportunities.
