New Work Zone to be Added to University Line Construction in Uptown Next Week

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE (May 2, 2025) - Starting Monday, May 5, Pittsburgh Regional Transit’s contractor will begin setting up a new work zone along Fifth Avenue between Diamond and Pride streets, on the side of the street closest to PPG Paints Arena. This work marks the start of construction for two new PRTX stations.

Station Locations:

  • Uptown West Station – at Fifth Avenue and Washington Place, next to PPG Paints Arena
  • Pride Street Station – at Fifth Avenue and Pride Street

Crews will begin excavation and install a new sidewalk with curbs and accessible ramps. Electrical crews will also run conduit for future station power and install foundations for new traffic signals and pedestrian poles.

Traffic Changes:

  • Traffic on Fifth Avenue will shift away from the construction zone, toward the side opposite PPG Paints Arena.
  • The existing parking lane on that side of the street will be converted into a permanent travel lane in preparation for the future bus lane.

The construction zone will remain in place 24/7 through the fall. Once complete, both stations will feature 30-foot bus shelters with upgraded transit amenities.

About the University Line:
The University Line BRT project began in Downtown Pittsburgh in September 2023. When finished, it will provide fast, reliable service between Downtown and Oakland—Pennsylvania’s second- and third-largest economic centers—via dedicated bus lanes and modern stations. The $291 million line is expected to open in 2027.
