Bike Lane Installed at Schenley Plaza

PRT’s contractor recently installed a new asphalt bike lane at Schenley Plaza behind the future site of the Bigelow Boulevard PRTX station.

When construction for the University Line is complete, there will be bike lanes on both sides of Forbes Avenue to allow bicyclists to travel in both directions. Fifth Avenue will have a new, protected, bi-directional bike lane that will replace the existing contraflow bus lane.

Forbes Avenue Reopened to Traffic

PRT’s contractor reopened Forbes Avenue after paving, line striping, and removing traffic barriers at four locations between Craft Avenue and Schenley Drive Extension.

Bus stops and sidewalks have reopened. Small barriers remain for pedestrian safety and to protect electrical conduits in the sidewalk at each of the future PRTX stations

Future phases of construction will include installation of new traffic signals and pedestrian safety systems, new bus shelters with transit amenities, and painted bus lanes.

Construction for the University Line is expected to be completed by 2027.

Sidewalk Demolition Continues on Fifth Avenue in Oakland

Sidewalk demolition is underway at several locations along Fifth Avenue.

PRT’s contractors continue to relocate utilities, run electrical conduit for station power, and place new sidewalks and curbs. Roadway restoration along with a new crosswalk was completed this week at the intersection of Fifth Avenue and Thackery Avenue. In addition, concrete pavers were installed on North Bouquet Street plus a new crosswalk at Fifth Avenue and Bouquet Street.

Future PRTX stations within the work zone are:

  • Chesterfield Road Station - Fifth Avenue at Chesterfield Road
  • Atwood Station (existing) - Fifth Avenue at Atwood Street
  • Bigelow Boulevard Station - Fifth Avenue at University Place
  • Tennyson Avenue Station - Fifth Avenue at Tennyson Avenue

Pedestrian access is maintained on the south side of Fifth Avenue and where space allows on the north side of Fifth Avenue.

Most bus stops within the new work zone remain available but may be moved a few feet to the left or right of the existing stop. Two bus stops – Fifth Avenue at Thackery and Fifth Avenue at University Place – are combined into one new temporary stop between the existing stops.

This phase of construction on Fifth Avenue is expected to be completed in fall 2025.

Utility Relocation to Continue in Uptown

PRT’s contractor is relocating water and drainage infrastructure in Uptown along both Forbes and Fifth avenues. PRT’s contractor can’t build bus stations on top of existing infrastructure, so they need to be relocated before building the new stations.

Crews are working on weekdays from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. to relocate catch basins and fire hydrants. This work will require a partial lane closure providing access to the manhole and/or catch basin on or near the curb. Traffic restrictions will change as work progresses and moves within the zone.

Lane restrictions will be removed each night.
