PRT Announces Upcoming Road Closures in Oakland

Several traffic restrictions will be in place in Oakland this week for road reconstruction and line painting as part of the University Line bus rapid transit project, Pittsburgh Regional Transit announced today.

Contractors will close the intersection of Fifth Avenue at Thackeray Avenue from 6 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday, August 9 for milling and paving. Motorists will be unable to turn right from Thackeray onto Fifth Avenue. The sidewalk and crosswalk along Fifth Avenue will remain closed.

North Bouquet Street from Fifth Avenue to O’Hara Street will be closed from 6 a.m. on Saturday, August 9 through 6 a.m. on Monday, August 11. The contractor will maintain access to the buildings and the parking garage. Sidewalks and crosswalks will remain open.

Starting on Monday, August 11 through Friday, August 15, crews will conduct line striping on Forbes Avenue from Craft Avenue to Schenley Drive Extension from 8 p.m. to 5 a.m. daily. Traffic restrictions will be lifted as the work progresses from block to block.

Buses will continue to serve stops on Fifth and Forbes avenues throughout the work, and flaggers will help with traffic flow. Motorists are encouraged to allow for additional travel time.

This construction is part of the second phase of the University Line bus rapid transit project, which will connect downtown Pittsburgh, Uptown, and Oakland to improve reliability, reduce travel times, and enhance the overall travel experience for commuters. PRT’s contractors recently relocated and upgraded the water, sewer, and electrical infrastructure on Forbes Avenue in preparation for the installation of new bus stations in 2026.
