Over the last few weeks, the Pittsburgh Regional Transit contractor has been demolishing the roadway and sidewalk on Sixth Avenue between Grant and Ross streets and placing new concrete.

The third and final section of concrete roadway will be poured July 3. The new roadway was replaced one section at a time to minimize disruption to traffic and pedestrians.

When construction is complete, this location will have two new 60-foot bus shelters with transit amenities.

The construction fencing is expected to remain in place 24/7 through late fall.

New Traffic Detour to Begin at Sixth Avenue and Diamond Street

Beginning July 8, the PRT contractor will have a new work zone at Sixth Avenue and Diamond Street. Vehicles traveling on Sixth Avenue will not be able to turn right onto Diamond Street. Instead, vehicles will continue straight and turn right onto Forbes Avenue.

The contractor will continue demolition activities and prepare to install new drainage infrastructure at this location.

The construction fencing is expected to remain in place 24/7 until late fall.

Sidewalk Demolition to Continue Adjacent to Wood Street Station

This week, the PRT contractor began removing the existing sidewalk on Sixth Avenue between Liberty Avenue and Wood Street adjacent to Wood Street Station.

Over the last few months, the contractor removed and relocated water and drainage infrastructure in the roadway on Sixth Avenue. Now, the contractor will begin preparations for a new sidewalk adjacent to Wood Street Station.

Later this summer, granite curbs will be installed at this location, along with a new bus shelter on the opposite side of the road adjacent to the K & L Gates building.

The construction fencing is expected to remain in place 24/7 until late fall.

Electrical Crews to Begin Vault Work Next Week

Electrical crews will begin installation of a new traffic signal foundation on Liberty Avenue, adjacent to Midtown Towers.

Beginning July 8, one travel lane on Liberty Avenue, adjacent to Midtown Towers, will be closed from Seventh Street to EQT Plaza.

Vehicles traveling on Liberty Avenue will still have access to Seventh Street.

The work zone at Seventh and Liberty is expected to remain for the next few weeks.

Electrical crews will also continue to place foundations for traffic poles and controller boxes and run conduit for new junction boxes.

When the BRT downtown project is complete, 35 new traffic signals will support the University Line in downtown Pittsburgh.

Over the next few weeks, electrical crews will be working weekdays from 7:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. at any of the following locations:

  • Fifth Avenue and Market Street
  • Fifth Avenue and Sixth Avenue
  • Fifth Avenue and Smithfield Street
  • Sixth Avenue and Liberty Avenue (Midtown Towers)
  • Sixth Avenue and Centre Avenue

Each location has additional work to be performed. The contractor will move between locations to help keep the project on schedule.

Pedestrian access will always be maintained; however, some work may require use of the adjacent parking/travel lane.
