Pittsburgh Regional Transit is Gearing Up for Construction of The University Line

PRT issued a “notice to proceed” to Independence Excavating, Inc. for the construction of Phase I of the University Line, aka the Downtown Loop

On June 16, 2023, Pittsburgh Regional Transit issued a “notice to proceed” to Independence Excavating, Inc. from Independence Ohio for the construction of Phase I of the University Line also known as the Downtown Loop.

This notice allows the contractor to start working on the project, but don’t worry! Construction will not start for at least a month.

During this month, the contractor will develop a work schedule for the first 90 days of construction. They will submit a traffic control plan and get permits from the City of Pittsburgh.

If you see people walking around with safety vests and hard hats, they’re probably taking pictures or doing pre-construction survey. They are required to document the existing conditions before any construction begins.

While we don’t have a work schedule yet, we will be sharing more details about the construction as soon as it’s available.

In the meantime, if you have questions or concerns about the BRT project, please email brt@rideprt.org.
