Preparations are Underway for Curb Installation at Sixth Avenue and Grant Street

The Pittsburgh Regional Transit contractor is working on Sixth Avenue between Grant and Ross streets. 

Over the past two weeks, the contractor completed pouring new concrete roadway and placed underdrains to collect ground water. Next week, the contractor will prepare a concrete footer to support new granite curbs that will be installed in the coming weeks. 

When construction of the University Line is complete, this location will have a new expanded sidewalk to accommodate two 60-foot bus shelters with transit amenities. 

Traffic is reduced to one travel lane in each direction. The sidewalk remains open across from the work site. ​ 

Construction fencing is expected to remain in place 24/7 until late fall.

Sidewalk Demolition to Continue at Sixth and Liberty Avenues

The Pittsburgh Regional Transit contractor is working on Sixth Avenue between Wood Street and Liberty Avenue. 

The contractor is working to remove the existing sidewalk on both Sixth Avenue and the Liberty Avenue sides of Wood Street station. This demolition must be done very carefully to avoid damaging the vaults for the light rail station. ​ 

When construction of the University Line is complete, the sidewalk adjacent to the K&L Gates building will be expanded to accommodate the new 30-foot bus shelter with transit amenities. ​ 

Currently, Sixth Avenue is closed to inbound traffic between Wood Street and Liberty Avenue. One outbound travel lane is maintained. The sidewalk remains open across from the work site. ​ 

Construction fencing is expected to remain in place 24/7 until late fall.

Utility Work to Continue at Sixth Avenue and Diamond Street 

The PRT contractor was already working on Sixth Avenue between Diamond Street and Fifth Avenue. Earlier this week, the contractor expanded the work zone to include a portion of Diamond Street between Sixth Avenue and Forbes Avenue.

Vehicles travelling on Sixth Avenue will not be able to turn right onto Diamond Street. Instead, vehicles will continue straight and turn right onto Forbes Avenue.

The contractor has already begun installing a new 15-inch drainage pipe. Next week, the contractor will pour a new catch basin and place underdrains to collect ground water.

Currently, this block of Sixth Avenue between Fifth Avenue and Diamond Street has a very narrow sidewalk that is not accessible. When construction is complete, this block of Sixth Avenue will have a new expanded sidewalk with new granite curbs and accessible ramps. The new infrastructure will improve safety and accessibility along the University Line corridor. 

The construction fencing is expected to remain in place 24/7 until late fall.

Electrical Crews to Work at Multiple Locations Next Week

Electrical crews will continue to place foundations for traffic poles and controller boxes. They will also run conduit for recently placed junction boxes.

When the BRT downtown project is complete, 35 new traffic signals will support the University Line in Downtown Pittsburgh.

Over the next few weeks, electrical crews will be working weekdays from 7:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. at the following locations:

  • Fifth Avenue and Market Street 
  • Fifth Avenue and Sixth Avenue 
  • Fifth Avenue and Smithfield Street 
  • Sixth Avenue and Liberty Avenue ​ 
  • Sixth Avenue and Centre Avenue 
  • Sixth Avenue and Smithfield Street 

Each location has additional work to be performed. The contractor will move between locations to help keep the project on schedule.

Pedestrian access will always be maintained; however, some work may require use of the adjacent parking/travel lane.
