When construction for the University Line is complete in downtown Pittsburgh, all five PRTX stations will be placed on new, and in some cases, expanded sidewalks with new granite curbs and roadway.

Before curbs can be installed, the existing sidewalk is removed, and the contractor will place a concrete footer to support the new curb.

Sidewalk demolition and curb preparation will continue on Fifth Avenue between Market Street and Liberty Avenue (adjacent to Triangle Park) and on Sixth Avenue between Wood Street and Liberty Avenue (adjacent to Wood Street station).

Utility Work Completed at Sixth Avenue and Diamond Street

Early last week, the Pittsburgh Regional Transit contractor wrapped up underground utility work at Sixth Avenue and Diamond Street.

The contractor removed and replaced an existing fire hydrant, installed a new 15-inch drainage pipe and poured a new catch basin.

Currently, this block of Sixth Avenue between Fifth Avenue and Diamond Street has a very narrow sidewalk that is not accessible. When construction is complete, this block of Sixth Avenue will have a new expanded sidewalk with new granite curbs and accessible ramps. The new infrastructure will improve safety and accessibility along the University Line corridor.

The construction fencing is expected to remain in place 24/7 until late fall.

Electrical Crews to Work at Multiple Locations Next Week

Early last week, contractors completed electrical activities at Fifth and Liberty avenues (pictured above).

Electrical crews will continue to place foundations for traffic poles and controller boxes. They will also run conduit for recently placed junction boxes.

When the BRT downtown project is complete, 35 new traffic signals will support the University Line in downtown Pittsburgh.

Over the next few weeks, electrical crews will be working weekdays from 7:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. at the following locations:

  • Fifth Avenue and Sixth Avenue
  • Fifth Avenue and Smithfield Street
  • Fifth Avenue and Ross Street
  • Sixth Avenue and Liberty Avenue
  • Sixth Avenue and Centre Avenue
  • Sixth Avenue and Smithfield Street

Each location has additional work to be performed. The contractor will move between locations to help keep the project on schedule.

Pedestrian access will aways be maintained; however, some work may require use of the adjacent parking/travel lane.
