Roadway Demolition is Underway at Sixth Avenue and Grant Street

Work Zone at Sixth Avenue and Grant Street

Last week, the PRT contractor began demolition inside the construction zone on Sixth Avenue between Grant and Ross streets. The contractor will continue demolition and begin restoration of the roadway next week.

Additional work will include replacing the sidewalk and granite curbs and installing electrical conduit and traffic signals.

To accommodate the new work site, traffic on Sixth Avenue will be reduced to one travel lane in each direction between Grant and Ross streets. The traffic detour will remain in place 24/7 until late fall.

When the University Line is complete, this location will have two 60-foot bus shelters, accessible ramps, and traffic signals.

Drainage Infrastructure Work to Continue at Fifth and Liberty Avenues

Last week, the PRT contractor established a new work zone on the north side of Fifth Avenue (adjacent to Triangle Park) between Market Street and Liberty Avenue.

Before crews could begin sidewalk demolition, they had to remove five trees from the planter in Triangle Park. The sidewalk will be expanded to accommodate the new bus shelter. Next week, the crews will wrap up the infrastructure for new sidewalk drains.

The construction detour will remain in effect 24/7 until work is finished late this fall. The sidewalk will remain open opposite the work site.

Electrical Work to Impact Traffic Signals in the Coming Weeks

Beginning early next week, electrical crews will be installing temporary controllers at nine intersections along Fifth and Sixth avenues Downtown.

Traffic signals will be out of service while the work is performed, and safety personnel will facilitate traffic. Work at each intersection is expected to take one or two days.

Most work will be completed on the sidewalk and should have minimal impact to vehicular traffic.

Upon completion there will be ten new controllers for 35 new traffic signals supporting the University Line bus rapid transit project in downtown Pittsburgh.

Crews will install the temporary controllers over the next few weeks, Monday through Friday from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. at the following locations:

  • Fifth Avenue and Market Street
  • Fifth Avenue and Smithfield Street
  • Fifth Avenue and William Penn Place

  • Fifth Avenue and Ross Street
  • Fifth Avenue and Sixth Avenue

Additionally, electric crews will continue to pour foundations, install traffic/light poles, and run conduit on weekdays from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. at the following locations:

  • Sixth Avenue and Grant Street
  • Sixth Avenue and Ross Street
