Next week, PRT’s contractor will start building two new PRTX bus shelters at Steel Plaza Station located on Sixth Avenue between Grant and Ross streets, adjacent to Mellon Green.

Bus shelters will remain closed to the public until all components have been tested. Station amenities will include two 60-foot bus shelters, emergency phone, security camera(s), seating, lighting, and real-time arrival signs.

The sidewalk adjacent to Mellon Green will be closed during shelter installation. Pedestrians will be able to use the crosswalks at Grant and Ross streets and the sidewalk adjacent to the work zone will remain open.

Shelter installation is expected to take three weeks, weather permitting. When installation is complete, the contractor will reduce the size of the fence to allow access to the sidewalk.

Construction fencing is expected to remain in place until spring/summer 2025.

When construction for the University Line is complete, there will be five new PRTX stations in the Downtown Loop.

Exploratory Excavation to Continue at Schenley Plaza

PRT’s contractor recently established a new work zone on Forbes Avenue between Schenley Drive and Schenley Drive Extension in Oakland.

The contractor is relocating drainage and electrical infrastructure before building a new PRTX bus station.

To accommodate construction, traffic is shifted to the left, and a temporary bike lane was installed. The sidewalk on Forbes Avenue in front of Hillman Library is closed. The crosswalk on Forbes Avenue at Schenley Drive opposite Hillman Library is open.

Construction fencing for utility relocation will remain in place 24/7 until May.

The contractor will return at a later date to construct Bigelow Boulevard Station with a 60-foot shelter and transit amenities.

  • Fifth Avenue between Diamond Street and Wyandotte Street
  • Forbes Avenue between Jumonville Street and Birmingham Bridge

Crews will move between multiple locations within each zone as work is completed. All drainage infrastructure within the limits of the project along Fifth and Forbes avenues will be inspected before catch basins are replaced.
