Sidewalk and Road Construction Progressing on Fifth Avenue in SoHo

Construction crews have made significant progress on sidewalk construction along the south side of Fifth Avenue from Craft Avenue past the Boulevard of the Allies on-ramp to the Birmingham Bridge. ​ ​ ​

After existing sidewalk was removed, crews installed new light poles, ADA ramps at the intersections, and placed new curbs and wider sidewalks. ​ ​ ​

This week, crews continued installation of new decorative fencing along a section within the construction zone. The fencing blocks pedestrians from the narrow hillside that drops to the Boulevard of the Allies.

Crews have begun sidewalk construction activities on the other side of the Birmingham Bridge entrance, also on the south side of Fifth Avenue.

Beginning October 1, crews will begin paving the south side of Fifth Avenue from Kirkpatrick Street at the Birmingham Bridge to Craft Avenue.​

Sidewalk Construction Continues in Uptown

Sidewalk construction activities are underway on the south (left) side of Fifth Avenue from the Birmingham Bridge to Diamond Street.​

​In addition, sidewalk construction activities are occurring throughout the north (left) side of Forbes Avenue from Boyd Street to Jumonville Street.​

Sidewalk construction includes the installation of new safety and accessibility systems, including accessible pedestrian signals​ and ADA ramps at intersections, conduit placement for traffic signals, new wider sidewalks, trench drains and curbs, and ​new street lights ​and trees.

In some cases, crews will need to upgrade stormwater and electrical infrastructure.

Access to side streets may be closed intermittently during work hours as construction activities progress throughout the area.​

Crews continue to work Monday through Saturday from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Shelter Components Being Installed in Shelter Frames

Crews continue the installation of shelter components such as roof glass, windscreens, and light fixtures at all shelter frames installed in Oakland and Uptown.

Shelters installed to date include:

At the end of this month, two stations will be installed on Fifth Avenue and one on Forbes Avenue, all in Oakland.​

Station amenities such as seating and next arrival screens will be installed after station components.​ Bike racks and trash cans have been placed at several locations.

By the end of the year, a total of 19 new PRTX stations will be installed at both inbound and outbound bus stops along the University Line corridor. ​

While construction is underway, riders must continue using the existing bus stops until the new shelters are fully completed and open for service. ​

When construction for the University Line is complete, there will be 24 PRTX stations throughout Downtown, Uptown, and Oakland. ​ ​ ​ ​ ​ ​

PRT continues to work closely with stakeholders including community groups, universities, businesses, and other impacted groups during construction. ​ ​ ​ ​ ​ ​

PRTX stations will have new shelters with upgraded amenities, including next-bus arrival screens, fare vending machines, seating, lighting, emergency phones and security cameras. ​
