On May 28, PRT’s contractor re-established the work zone on Sixth Avenue between Smithfield Street and William Penn Place.

Last winter, the contractor installed new water and drainage infrastructure.

Current construction activities include replacing the roadway, sidewalk and curb. In addition, electrical crews are installing foundations and running conduit that will supply power to new traffic signals.

When construction is complete, this location will have expanded sidewalks with granite curb and accessible ramps. The new bus lane will shift to the center of the road to accommodate vehicles exiting Mellon Square Garage.

While this location is not one of the five PRTX station locations, the new infrastructure will improve safety and accessibility for everyone.

Two-directional traffic is being maintained on Sixth Avenue between Smithfield Street and William Penn Place. Mellon Square Garage remains accessible to vehicles and pedestrians. The sidewalk remains open opposite the work site.

This construction detour will remain in effect 24/7 until late fall.
