Earlier this week, electrical crews began installing temporary controllers at nine intersections along Fifth and Sixth avenues downtown.

Traffic signals will be out of service while the work is performed, and safety personnel will facilitate traffic. Work at each intersection is expected to take one or two days.

Most work will be completed on the sidewalk and should have minimal impact on vehicular traffic.

Upon completion there will be ten new controllers for 35 new traffic signals supporting the University Line bus rapid transit project in downtown Pittsburgh.

Crews will install the temporary controllers over the next few weeks, Monday through Friday from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. at the following locations:

  • Fifth Avenue and Grant Street
  • Fifth Avenue and Sixth Avenue
  • Sixth Avenue and Grant Street
  • Sixth Avenue and Liberty Avenue
  • Sixth Avenue and Wood Street

Additionally, electric crews will continue to pour foundations, install traffic/light poles, and run conduit on weekdays from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. at the following locations:

  • Sixth Avenue and Grant Street
  • Sixth Avenue and Ross Street
  • Fifth Avenue and Sixth Avenue
  • Fifth Avenue and Ross Street

Each location has additional work to be performed. The contractor will move between locations to help keep the project on schedule.

Pedestrian access will always be maintained; however, some of the work may require temporary use of the adjacent parking/travel lane.

Concrete Roadway to Be Placed at Fifth and Liberty Avenues Next Week

The PRT contractor is finishing up some drainage infrastructure work on Fifth Avenue between Market Street and Liberty Avenue (adjacent to Triangle Park). This work includes installing three new sidewalk drains and fabricating a custom storm drain in the roadway.

Next week, they will prepare the roadway for new concrete. The contractor will start by removing part of the existing roadway, then place reinforced steel rebar to support the new concrete. The new roadway will be placed in sections to minimize the disruption to traffic and pedestrians.

The first section of new concrete roadway will be poured on Saturday, June 22nd. Fifth Avenue between Market Street and Liberty Avenue will be closed from 2:00 a.m.-5:00 a.m.

After work is complete, the construction fencing will be reset and one travel lane heading inbound on Fifth Avenue will be reopened to traffic.

Construction fencing is expected to remain in place 24/7 until late fall.

Demolition to Continue at Sixth and Grant Next Week

Demolition is underway on Sixth Avenue between Grant and Ross streets. The contractor is using an excavator to break up the existing roadway and sidewalks so they can be replaced.

Demolition is significantly louder than other construction activities and is expected to take two weeks at this location.

Please note that noise is being monitored and falls within a City of Pittsburgh Noise Ordinance.

Final restoration, which includes pouring concrete roadway and placing new sidewalks and curbs, will be much less noisy.

Ultimately, the contractor will be replacing the roadway, sidewalk, and curbs.

When construction is complete, this location will have two 60-foot bus shelters with transit amenities.

Construction fencing is expected to remain in place 24/7 until late fall.

Demolition to Begin at Sixth and Wood Next Week

Next week, PRT’s contractor will begin sidewalk demolition on Sixth Avenue between Wood Street and Liberty Avenue adjacent to Wood Street station.

The contractor will be using a jackhammer to break up and remove the existing sidewalk before a new one can be placed. Sidewalk demolition is expected to be significantly louder than other construction activities and will take one or two days to complete. The contractor will perform additional demolition work in the coming weeks.

Please note that noise is being monitored and falls within a City of Pittsburgh Noise Ordinance.

Final restoration, which includes pouring a new concrete roadway and placing new sidewalks and curbs, will be much less noisy.

Ultimately, the contractor will be replacing the entire roadway, sidewalk, and curbs on both sides of the street. The sidewalk will be expanded in front of the K&L Gates building to accommodate the new PRTX bus shelter.

Construction fencing is expected to remain in place 24/7 until late fall
