University Line Construction Will Close a Portion of Sixth Avenue on Saturday

Pittsburgh Regional Transit’s contractor is replacing the concrete roadway between Wood Street and Liberty Avenue one section at a time. Two sections of new concrete roadway have already been placed. Roadway restoration is expected to take a few weeks.

On Saturday July 27, Sixth Avenue between Wood Street and Liberty Avenue will be closed from 5 a.m. to 5 p.m. while crew run conduit that will supply power to the new bus shelter.

When the University Line construction is complete, there will be a new concrete roadway, new curbs, new sidewalks and a new 30-foot bus shelter with transit amenities adjacent to the K&L gates building.

Construction fencing is expected to remain in place 24/7 until construction is complete.

Electrical Crews Will Work Some Night Shifts Next Week

When the BRT downtown project is complete, 35 new traffic signals will support the University Line in downtown Pittsburgh.

Over the next week, electrical crews will be working overnight from 6:30 p.m. to 4:30 a.m. at the following locations to run conduit across the roadway and supply power to new traffic signals:

  • July 29 and 30 - Liberty Avenue at Sixth Avenue (adjacent to Midtown Towers)
  • July 31 - Sixth Avenue at Wood Street (adjacent to Wood Street Station)
  • August 1 and 2 - Fifth Avenue at Smithfield Street (adjacent to Target)

This work is being performed overnight to minimize disruption to traffic.

Additional crews will be working from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. at the following locations:

  • Sixth Avenue (between Grant and Ross streets)
  • Sixth Avenue at Centre Avenue
  • Sixth Avenue at Liberty Avenue
  • Fifth Avenue at Sixth Avenue
  • Fifth Avenue at Cherry Way
  • Fifth Avenue at Wood Street

Each location has additional work to be performed. The contractor will move between locations to help keep the project on schedule.

Pedestrian access will aways be maintained; however, some work may require use of the adjacent parking/travel lane.

Granite Curb Has Arrived!

New granite curb is being placed at each of the five PRTX station locations. The installation must be closely coordinated with the installation of the new roadway and sidewalks.

Earlier this week, some of the granite curb began to arrive. PRT’s contractor has been preparing each of the work locations for curb installation, by removing the existing roadway and sidewalks, and placing concrete footers, to support the new curb.

All work locations with new curbs will also have new accessible ramps. In total, there will be 42 new accessible ramps throughout the downtown loop.

The contractor will begin installation of new curbs and accessible ramps at Fifth Avenue and Grant Street, adjacent to the County Courthouse.
