Concrete Roadway to be Poured at Fifth Avenue and Liberty Avenue
June 21, 2024

The PRT contractor has begun demolition of the existing roadway on Fifth Avenue between Liberty Avenue and Market Street. The contractor is only replacing one section of roadway at a time to minimize the disruptions to traffic and pedestrians.
On Saturday, June 22, the contractor will pour new roadway in what is currently the center lane on Fifth Avenue between Market Street and Liberty Avenue between 2:00 a.m. and 5:00 a.m. A section of Fifth Avenue will be closed during that time.
After work is complete, the construction fencing will be reset and one travel lane heading inbound on Fifth Avenue will be reopened to traffic.
The final section of concrete roadway will be poured on Thursday, June 27 between 7:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. This work is not expected to disrupt traffic.
Later this summer, the contractor will replace the current sidewalk on Fifth Avenue, adjacent to Triangle Park. The new sidewalk will be expanded to accommodate the new bus shelter.
Construction fencing is expected to remain in place 24/7 until late fall.

Utility work to begin at Sixth Avenue and Diamond Street Next Week
The Pittsburgh Regional Transit contractor will begin utility work on Sixth Avenue between Fifth Avenue and Diamond Street next week from 7:00 p.m. to 5:00 a.m. This work is being performed at night to minimize disruption to traffic. Sixth Avenue will be reduced to one travel lane with traffic safety personnel facilitating two-directional traffic.
The contractor will remove the existing roadway and sidewalk adjacent to the Allegheny County Family Division Building. The sidewalk will be expanded, and a new fire hydrant will be installed.
When the contractor is not working in this area, traffic restrictions will be removed and both travel lanes will be reopened.
Construction fencing is expected to remain in place 24/7 until late fall.

Electrical Work Ongoing at Various Locations
Earlier this week, electrical crews finished installing temporary traffic signal controllers at nine intersections along Fifth and Sixth Avenues downtown.
The controllers will be used to support the 35 new traffic signals for the University Line in downtown Pittsburgh.
Next week, multiple crews will continue to pour foundations, install traffic lights/poles, and run conduit on weekdays from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. at the following locations:
- Fifth Avenue and Ross Street
- Fifth Avenue and Smithfield Street
- Fifth Avenue and Market Street
- Fifth Avenue and Cherry Way
- Sixth Avenue and Centre Avenue
- Sixth Avenue and Liberty Avenue
Each location has additional work to be performed, so the contractor will move between locations to help keep the project on schedule.
Pedestrian access will always be maintained; however, some of the work may require temporary use of the adjacent parking/travel lane.

Construction locations for the University Line include:
- Sixth Avenue (between Fifth Avenue and Diamond Street)
- Fifth Avenue (between Ross Street and Sixth Avenue)
- Fifth Avenue (between Grant Street and Smithfield Street)
- Fifth Avenue (between Market Street and Liberty Avenue)
- Sixth Avenue (between Wood Street and Liberty Avenue)
