Construction for Traffic Signals Will Continue on Fifth and Sixth Avenues Next Week

When construction for University Line project is complete, there will be 35 new traffic signals to support the downtown loop.

The PRT electrical subcontractor is working weekdays from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. to install traffic signal foundations.

Construction activities are scheduled to happen at the following locations over the next two weeks.

  • Fifth Avenue at Ross Street
  • Fifth Avenue at Grant Street
  • Sixth Avenue and Centre Avenue
  • Fifth Avenue and Wood Street

The contractor will begin installing traffic signals poles on top of the foundations in the spring. A small construction fence will remain in place at each location until work is complete.

Utility Coordination Will Continue at Sixth Avenue and Wood Street Next Week

Construction activities are currently on hold at Sixth Avenue and Wood Street while PRT contractors coordinate with utility owners and design consultants. Downtown Pittsburgh is densely populated with underground utilities and this location is particularly complex due to the underground light rail tunnel.

PRT anticipates that construction activities, including exploratory excavation and installation of new water and drainage infrastructure will resume within the next week.

Construction fencing remains in place on Sixth Avenue between Wood Street and Liberty Avenue adjacent to Wood Street Station.

Currently, two travel lanes on Sixth Avenue heading toward Liberty (adjacent to Wood Street Station) are closed. Vehicles traveling on Sixth Avenue are forced to turn left or right onto Wood Street. One travel lane is maintained so vehicles traveling on Liberty Avenue can turn right onto Sixth Avenue.

Underground utility work will continue at this location through the end of March.

Final restoration of the street and sidewalk, including new ADA ramps will begin in the spring.
