Construction Begins at Sixth Avenue and Grant Street on Monday
May 10, 2024

PRT’s contractor is expected to establish the new location on Sixth Avenue between Grant and Ross streets Monday, May 13th.
PRT’s contractor relocated the water and drainage infrastructure at this location this past winter. Next, the contractor will install the foundations and electrical conduit for future traffic signals before replacing the sidewalk, roadway, and granite curbs.
Later this summer, the contractor will install two new 60-foot bus shelters, accessible ramps, and traffic signals.
To accommodate the new work site, two travel lanes on the south side of Sixth Avenue (adjacent to BNY Mellon Park) will be closed between Grant and Ross streets.
Traffic will be reduced to one travel lane in each direction on the north side of Sixth Avenue (adjacent to US Steel) between Grant and Ross streets.
Pedestrian access will be maintained opposite the work site, adjacent to the US Steel building. The sidewalk adjacent to Mellon Park will be closed.
The construction detour will remain in effect 24/7 until work is finished at this location, which is expected to happen late fall.

Restoration Will Continue at Fifth and Liberty Avenues Next Week
The PRT contractor poured a new concrete roadway on the south side of Fifth Avenue adjacent to Heinz Healey’s last week. The concrete takes about four weeks to set.
After the roadway is fully set, the contractor will move to the opposite side of the street to begin restoration on the north side of Fifth Avenue (adjacent to Triangle Park).
Restoration on the north side includes a full replacement of the roadway, sidewalk, and granite curbs. The sidewalk will be expanded, and five trees will be removed to accommodate the new bus shelter.
Additional activities to begin later this summer include installing a new shelter, transit amenities, and traffic signals.

Traffic Pole Installation to Continue at Multiple Locations Next Week
The Pittsburgh Regional Transit electrical subcontractor started erecting poles for traffic signals late last week.
The poles are being placed on the newly installed foundations and are intended to support the 35 new traffic signals for the Bus Rapid Transit project.
Over the next few weeks, the PRT electrical subcontractor will be working weekdays from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. at the following locations:
- Fifth Avenue and Cherry Street (Old Kauffman's building garage)
- Fifth Avenue and Smithfield Street
- Fifth Avenue and Wood Street
- Sixth Avenue and Grant Street
- Sixth Avenue and Ross Streets
- Sixth Avenue and Liberty Avenue
- Sixth Avenue and Centre Avenue (8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.)
Each location has additional work to be performed. The contractor will move between locations to help keep the project on schedule.
Pedestrian access will always be maintained; however, some of the work may require temporary use of the adjacent parking/travel lane.
What’s Next?
The PRT contractor will be adding more work locations in the coming weeks. The dates listed below may be adjusted slightly, but work will begin soon.
The tentative schedule is as follows:
- May 20 - Sixth Avenue and Diamond Street
- May 27 - The north side of Fifth Avenue between Market Street and Liberty Avenue adjacent to Triangle Park
- May 29 - Sixth Avenue between Smithfield Street and William Penn Place
- May 31 - Fifth Avenue William Penn Place
