Construction Activities Begin on Fifth Avenue in Oakland

PRT’s contractor recently established a new work zone on Fifth Avenue between Chesterfield Road and Bellefield Avenue in Oakland. In an effort to reduce traffic congestion, the pedestrian islands were removed at Fifth and Bellefield Avenues before construction began.

Within the new work zone, PRT will construct four new PRTX Stations and improve the existing Atwood Station.

Future PRTX stations within the new work zone are:

  • Chesterfield Road Station - Fifth Avenue at Chesterfield Road
  • Atwood Station (existing) - Fifth Avenue at Atwood Street
  • Bigelow Boulevard Station - Fifth Avenue at University Place
  • Tennyson Avenue Station - Fifth Avenue at Tennyson Avenue

Pedestrian access is being maintained on both sides of Fifth Avenue, except for a small area at Fifth Avenue and Chesterfield Road.

The majority of bus stops within the new work zone remain available to accommodate riders, but may be moved a few feet to the left or right of the existing stop. Two stops – Fifth Avenue at Thackery and Fifth Avenue at University Place - will be combined into one new temporary stop mid-block between the existing stops.

This phase of construction on Fifth Avenue is expected to be completed in fall 2025.

This phase of construction includes excavation and utility relocation, installation of new sidewalks, curbs, ADA-accessible ramps, and placing underground conduit for station power, traffic signals, and pedestrian safety systems.

This phase of construction on Fifth Avenue is expected to be completed fall 2025.

Future phases include roadway restoration as well as the installation of a red bus lane and a 30-foot bus shelter.

PRT’s contractor is nearly finished with their inital phase of construction on Fifth Avenue at Washington Place in Uptown.

The contractor recently poured new concrete sidewalks, curbs and accessible ramps. Electrical crews placed foundations for traffic and pedestrian signals and ran underground conduit to supply power to the future PRTX stations.

In future phases, crews will return to perform roadway restoration and install a red bus lane, a 30-foot bus shelter, new traffic signals and pedestrian poles.

Utility Relocations to Continue in Uptown

PRT’s contractor is relocating water and drainage and infrastructure in Uptown. Crews are working weekdays from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. to relocate several catch basins and fire hydrants.

This work will require a partial lane closure providing access to the manhole and/or catch basin on or near the curb. Traffic restrictions will change as work progresses and moves from side to side within the zone. Lane restrictions will be removed each night.
