Granite Curb Installation Is Underway
August 5, 2024

New granite curbs and accessible ramps are being installed at each of the five PRTX station locations and at many other locations throughout the downtown loop.
These installations must be coordinated with the installation of the new roadway and sidewalks. Contractors must place a concrete footer at each location before the granite curb can be placed.
Each location with a new accessible ramp will also have new granite curb.

Sidewalk Demolition to Continue at Sixth Avenue and Smithfield Street
Early last week, the contractor began sidewalk demolition on Sixth Avenue between Smithfield Street and William Penn Place adjacent to Mellon Square Garage.
Once the existing sidewalk is removed, the contractor will begin erecting a wood frame with steel rebar to pour the new sidewalk. They will also place a concrete footer to support the granite curb.
The new sidewalk will expand farther into the roadway allowing more room for pedestrians and existing loading zones. The distance from one side of the street to the other will become shorter, making it easier and safer to cross.
When construction is complete, this location will have new expanded sidewalks with accessible ramps.
While this location is not one of the five PRTX station locations, this will improve safety and accessibility for everyone.
Mellon Square Garage will remain accessible from all entrances and exits, and the sidewalk will remain open on Sixth Avenue opposite the work zone.
New sidewalks and curbs are also being installed at each of the five station locations and on Sixth Avenue between Fifth Avenue and Diamond Street.

Electrical Crews Are Assembling New Traffic Signals
Over the past few months, electrical crews have been placing foundations for new traffic signals and erecting poles throughout the downtown loop.
This week, they will begin to assemble the 35 new traffic signals.
When the project is complete, 35 new traffic signals will support the University Line in downtown Pittsburgh.
During the week, electrical crews will be working weekdays from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the following locations:
- Sixth Avenue and Grant Avenue
- Sixth Avenue and Centre Avenue
- Sixth Avenue and Liberty Avenue
- Fifth Avenue and Sixth Avenue
- Fifth Avenue and Cherry Way
- Fifth Avenue and Wood Street
Each location has additional work to be performed. The contractor will move between locations to help keep the project on schedule.
Pedestrian access will always be maintained; however, some work may require the use of the adjacent parking/travel lane.
