Earlier this week, PRT’s contractor began placing granite curb at Fifth Avenue and Grant Street adjacent to the Allegheny County Courthouse.
Next week, the contractor will pour a new exposed aggregate concrete sidewalk and install two accessible ramps.
While this location is not one of the five PRTX station locations, the new sidewalk and accessible ramps will improve safety and accessibility for everyone.

New Sidewalk Poured at Fifth and Liberty Avenues
Earlier this week, PRT’s contractor began pouring new exposed aggregate concrete sidewalk at Fifth Avenue and Liberty Avenue, adjacent to Triangle Park.
Before pouring the new sidewalk, the contractor erected a wood frame with steel rebar to reinforce the concrete.
After the concrete is set, the contractor will install granite curb, pour four new accessible ramps, and place a concrete slab for the new bus station.
When construction for the University Line is complete, this location will have a new roadway, new granite curb, new sidewalk with accessible ramps, and a 60-foot bus shelter with transit amenities adjacent to Triangle Park.
To accommodate the new bus shelter and expanded sidewalk, Fifth Avenue between Market Street and Liberty Avenue will be reduced to one travel lane in each direction.
Construction fencing is expected to remain in place 24/7 until late fall.

Granite Curb Installation to Continue at Fifth Avenue and William Penn Place
Over the past few weeks, PRT’s contractor has been preparing to install new granite curb at Fifth Avenue and William Penn Place, adjacent to the Citizens Bank Building.
Earlier this week, the contractor poured a concrete footer and began granite curb installation.
Next week, they will continue installation of the granite curb, along with a new sidewalk, and a concrete slab to support the new bus shelter.
When construction for the University Line is complete, this location will have a new roadway, new granite curb, new sidewalk and a 30-foot bus shelter with transit amenities.
Construction fencing is expected to remain in place 24/7 until late fall.

New Sidewalk Placed at Sixth Avenue and Smithfield Street
Earlier this week, the contractor began sidewalk demolition on Sixth Avenue between Smithfield Street and William Penn Place adjacent to Mellon Square Garage.
Once the existing sidewalk was removed, the contractor erected a wood frame with steel rebar before pouring the new sidewalk.
When construction is complete, this location will have new expanded sidewalks with granite curb and accessible ramps.
While this location is not one of the five PRTX station locations, the new infrastructure will improve safety and accessibility for everyone.
The new sidewalk will expand farther into the roadway allowing more room for pedestrians and existing loading zones. The distance from one side of the street to the other will become shorter, making it easier and safer to cross.
Mellon Square Garage will remain accessible from all entrances and exits, and the sidewalk will remain open on Sixth Avenue opposite the work zone.
Construction fencing is expected to remain in place 24/7 until late fall.

Electrical Crews Are Assembling New Traffic Signals
Electrical crews are working to assemble 35 new traffic signals that will ultimately support the University Line in downtown Pittsburgh.
Over the past few months, electrical crews have been placing foundations for new traffic signals and erecting poles throughout the downtown loop. In addition, they are also installing new traffic controller boxes with new foundations.
Over the next week, electrical crews will be working weekdays from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the following locations:
- Sixth Avenue and Grant Avenue
- Sixth Avenue and Centre Avenue
- Sixth Avenue and Liberty Avenue
- Fifth Avenue and Sixth Avenue
- Fifth Avenue and Cherry Way
- Fifth Avenue and Wood Street
- Fifth Avenue and Smithfield Street
Each location has additional work to be performed. The contractor will move between locations to help keep the project on schedule.
Pedestrian access will always be maintained; however, some work may require the use of the adjacent parking/travel lane.
