On Monday, May 20, the Pittsburgh Regional Transit contractor will mobilize a new construction site on Sixth Avenue between Fifth Avenue and Diamond Street.
Work will be performed on Sixth Avenue adjacent to the Allegheny County Family Division building. The two travel lanes inside the work zone will be closed.
Two-way traffic will be facilitated on the opposite side of the road, adjacent to the Duquesne University building.
This work zone is expected to remain in place until late fall.

Third Work Location Added at Sixth Avenue Between Grant and Ross Streets
Earlier this week, the PRT contractor established a new work zone on Sixth Avenue between Grant and Ross Streets.
PRT’s contractor relocated the water and drainage infrastructure at this location this past winter.
Next, the electrical subcontractor will be installing conduit for the new bus shelter, pouring a foundation for a new traffic signal, and relocating existing lighting. After the electrical work is complete, the contractor will be replacing the sidewalk, roadway, and granite curbs.
Later this summer, the contractor will install two new 60-foot bus shelters, accessible ramps, and traffic signals.
To accommodate the new work site, two travel lanes on the south side of Sixth Avenue (adjacent to BNY Mellon Park) will be closed between Grant and Ross streets.
Traffic will be reduced to one travel lane in each direction on the north side of Sixth Avenue (adjacent to US Steel) between Grant and Ross streets.
Pedestrian access will be maintained opposite the work site, adjacent to the US Steel building. The sidewalk adjacent to Mellon Park will be closed.
The construction detour will remain in effect 24/7 until work is finished at this location, which is expected to happen late fall.

Roadway Restoration to Continue at Fifth and Liberty Avenues Next Week
Restoration efforts are ongoing on the south side of Fifth Avenue between Market Street and Liberty Avenue.
The PRT contractor poured concrete on the south side of Fifth Avenue at the beginning of May. This takes about a month for the concrete to set before vehicles can drive on it.
Around the end of May, the contractor will move to the opposite side of the street to begin restoration on the north side of Fifth Avenue (adjacent to Triangle Park).
Restoration on the north side includes a full restoration of the roadway, granite curb, and sidewalk. The sidewalk will be expanded, and five trees will be removed to accommodate the new bus shelter.
Additional activities will begin later this summer which include installing a new shelter, transit amenities, and traffic signals.
The construction detour will remain in effect 24/7 until work is finished late this fall.

Electrical Work Supporting Traffic Signals to Continue Next Week
The Pittsburgh Regional Transit electrical subcontractor will continue construction activities for traffic signals next week.
Ultimately, 35 new traffic signals will support the University Line bus rapid transit project in downtown Pittsburgh.
Over the next few weeks, the PRT electrical subcontractor will have two crews pouring foundations, installing poles and running conduit for future traffic signals.
They will be working weekdays from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. at the following locations:
- Fifth Avenue and Cherry Way (Old Kauffman’s building garage)
- Fifth Avenue and Sixth Avenue
- Fifth Avenue and Smithfield Street
- Sixth Avenue and Liberty Avenue
- Sixth Avenue and Centre Avenue (8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.)
- Sixth Avenue and Ross Street
Each location has additional work to be performed. The contractor will move between locations to help keep the project on schedule.
Pedestrian access will always be maintained; however, some of the work may require temporary use of the adjacent parking travel lane.

What’s Next?
As restoration efforts continue, the PRT contractor will begin mobilizing additional work zones. The dates listed below may be slightly adjusted but work will begin soon. The tentative schedule is as follows:
- May 20: Sixth Avenue between Fifth Avenue and Diamond Street
- May 28: The northside of Fifth Avenue between Market Street and Liberty Avenue Adjacent to Triangle Park
- May 29: Sixth Avenue between Smithfield Street and William Penn Place
- May 31: Fifth Avenue between Grant and Smithfield Streets
Once these work areas are set, the construction fencing will remain up until the end of the year.
