Two New Work Zones Coming to Uptown September 22

Over the summer, PRT’s contractor relocated drainage infrastructure along Forbes and Fifth avenues in parts of Uptown and Oakland to accommodate new sidewalks, roadways, and future PRTX stations.

On September 22 and 23, PRT’s contractor will establish two additional work sites in Uptown. The first zone will be located on Forbes Avenue from Jumonville to Brady streets. The second construction zone will be located on Fifth Avenue from Pride to Jumonville streets.

PRT’s contractor will be removing and replacing the existing sidewalk, curbs, and accessible ramps along this corridor.

Traffic on Forbes Avenue between Jumonville and Brady streets will be maintained with one lane except between 3:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. Monday through Friday, where two lanes are maintained to accommodate rush hour traffic.

While the sidewalks on the south side of Forbes Avenue will be closed, pedestrians will be able to use the crosswalks and sidewalks on the north side of the road.  Access to side streets will remain open.

When work in this location is complete, there will be new expanded curbs and sidewalks, new ADA-accessible ramps and a 30-foot PRTX station with transit amenities.

Work in this location is expected to remain until the end of the year.

Work in this location is expected to remain until the end of the year.

When work in this location is complete, there will be new expanded curbs and sidewalks, new accessible ramps, and two new 30-foot PRTX stations with transit amenities.

Sidewalks Reopened at Several Locations Along Fifth Avenue

PRT’s contractor has reopened multiple sections of the sidewalk along Fifth Avenue between North Bellefield Avenue and Chesterfield Road. Crews relocated utilities, expanded sidewalks, and installed new curbs and accessible ramps. Sidewalks have been reopened at the following locations:

  • Fifth Avenue at North Bellefield Avenue
  • Fifth Avenue at Ruskin Avenue
  • Fifth Avenue at Tennyson Avenue
  • Fifth Avenue at Chesterfield Road

Contractors continue to excavate, relocate utilities, and run conduit for station power at Fifth Avenue and University Place as well as Fifth Avenue at Atwood Station. This phase of construction is expected to be completed in Fall of 2025.

In future phases, PRT will install five new PRTX stations along Fifth Avenue in Oakland with transit amenities, traffic signals, and pedestrian safety signals.

Additionally, the current contraflow bus lane on the south side of Fifth Avenue will be removed and will become a two-way bicycle track.

Utility Relocation Continues in Uptown

PRT’s contractor continues to relocate drainage infrastructure along both Forbes and Fifth avenues. Stormwater inlet relocations are needed to match the new expanded sidewalk and sidewalk bump outs to be installed along Forbes and Fifth Avenues in Uptown.

This work will require a partial lane closure providing access to the manhole and/or catch basin on or near the curb. Traffic restrictions will change as work progresses and moves within the zone. Lane restrictions will be removed each night.

PRTX stations will have new shelters with upgraded amenities, including next-bus arrival screens, fare vending machines, seating, lighting, emergency phones, and security cameras.
