PRT Moving Outbound Buses from Fifth Avenue to Forbes Avenue in Oakland

Bus traveling outbound in the counterflow lane on Fifth Avenue

Pittsburgh Regional Transit is reminding riders of big changes coming to Fifth and Forbes avenues in Oakland starting Sunday, January 4, 2026.

The counterflow bus lane on Fifth Avenue will be permanently retired from service. This marks a significant milestone for the University Line Project, which better connects Uptown, Downtown, and Oakland.

Summary of changes:

  • 17 outbound bus stops along the Fifth Avenue bus lane will be eliminated.
  • 9 bus routes - 54, 61D, 71A, 71B, 71C, 71D, 75, 93, and P3 – that currently travel outbound in the bus lane on Fifth Avenue will shift over to Forbes Avenue, where they will travel with the direction of general traffic.
  • Buses will serve stops at the corresponding intersections on Forbes Avenue.
  • Outbound buses on Forbes Avenue will travel with general traffic until a bus-only lane is established.

PRT will have staff at select bus stops along Fifth Avenue to help riders navigate the changes.

During construction of the University Line, a bicycle lane will be installed along Fifth Avenue where the counterflow bus lane is currently located, and a dedicated bus-only lane will be installed along Forbes Avenue through Uptown and Oakland.

The routing changes will be incorporated into PRT’s regularly scheduled service changes in February.
