Sidewalk Reopened at Fifth Avenue and Chesterfield Road

The sidewalk at the intersection of Fifth Avenue and Chesterfield Road has reopened.

The contractor relocated underground infrastructure, poured new concrete sidewalks and curbs, and replaced the ADA-accessible ramp at this location. While the construction fencing has
been removed, a small portion of orange fencing remains to protect the underground electrical conduit.

When construction is complete, Chesterfield Station will have a 60-foot bus shelter with transit amenities and intersection improvements.

PRT’s contractor will return to pave the roadway and install the new PRTX station next year.

Storm Inlet Relocation Continues in Uptown

PRT’s contractor started relocating storm inlets along Forbes Avenue in Uptown. During this phase of work, crews will be working at multiple locations on the roadway between Pride Street
and the Birmingham Bridge.

These storm inlets must be relocated to accommodate the expansion of the curbs and sidewalks in this corridor.

Almost every block in the Uptown neighborhood will receive new sidewalks and curbs, in addition to 10 new PRTX stations. PRTX stations in Uptown are as follows:

Inbound on Fifth Avenue:

  •  Uptown West Station
  • Pride Street Station
  • Uptown Central Station
  • Jumonville Street Station
  • Soho Station

Outbound on Forbes Avenue:

  • Soho Station
  • Jumonville Street Station
  • Uptown Central Station
  • Pride Street Station
  • Uptown West Station

In total, the University Line project will relocate 153 storm inlets in Uptown and Oakland to accommodate new and expanded sidewalks, curbs, and bicycle infrastructure.

Concrete Station Slabs Installed in Uptown and Oakland

PRT’s contractor has poured nine concrete slabs which will support new PRTX Stations in Uptown and Oakland.

As part of the process, crews must remove the existing sidewalk and curbs to install electrical conduits. Once the sidewalk and curbs are replaced, crews can pour the station’s concrete
base around the newly installed electrical components. This slab serves as support for the new PRTX station and houses electrical conduits to provide electricity to the station.

There will be 19 stations in the Uptown and Oakland phase of construction. The completed station slabs are located at:

  • Forbes Avenue at Craft Avenue
  • Forbes Avenue at McKee Place
  • Forbes Avenue at South Bouquet (2 station slabs)
  • Forbes Avenue at Schenley Plaza
  • Fifth Avenue at Tennyson Avenue
  • Fifth Avenue at Chesterfield Road
  • Fifth Avenue at Pride Street
  • Fifth Avenue at Washington Place

Orange fencing around the station slabs will remain to provide a safety barrier between pedestrians and the underground electrical conduit recently placed in the sidewalk.

PRT’s contractor will return to all these locations later to install new PRTX stations.
