Sidewalk Restoration to Continue on Fifth Avenue

Sidewalk restoration is underway at several locations along Fifth Avenue in Oakland. PRT’s contractors continue to excavate, relocate water and sewer utilities, and run electrical conduit
for station power.

PRT’s contractor has completed sidewalk restoration at Fifth Avenue and Chesterfield Road. In the coming weeks, crews are expected to wrap up the remaining sidewalk and curb work at Fifth
and Bellefield avenues and Fifth and Tennyson avenues.

In addition to new PRTX station locations, several sections of Fifth Avenue will have new and expanded sidewalks, new curbs, and accessible ramps. These upgrades will improve safety and
accessibility for everyone.

During construction, efforts have been made to ensure sidewalks, crosswalks, and ADA access are provided for pedestrian safety. Pedestrian access is maintained on the south side of Fifth Avenue and where space allows on the north side of Fifth Avenue.

Future PRTX stations within the work zone on Fifth Avenue:

  • Chesterfield Road Station - at Chesterfield Road
  • Atwood Station (existing) - at Atwood Street
  • Bigelow Boulevard Station - at University Place
  • Tennyson Avenue Station - at Tennyson Avenue

Most bus stops within the new work zone remain available but may be moved a few feet to the left or right of the existing stop. Two bus stops – Fifth Avenue at Thackery and Fifth Avenue at University Place – are combined into one new temporary stop between the existing stops.

This phase of construction on Fifth Avenue is expected to be completed in fall 2025.

Green Infrastructure Planned at Schenley Plaza

PRT’s contractor has installed the structure for future green infrastructure plants on Forbes Avenue near Schenley Plaza.

Crews have created the frame for the bioswale which is a long trench to collect stormwater runoff from the street and sidewalk. Next spring, crews will install the subbase of gravel and
organic matter before a final layer of vegetation is applied. These layers will slow the water infiltration and filter out pollutants.

Electrical Infrastructure Work to Continue on Fifth Avenue in Oakland

PRT’s electrical subcontractor will continue to place underground electrical conduit along Fifth Avenue in Oakland to supply power to the future PRTX stations.

Crews will be working weekdays from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Fifth Avenue between Chesterfield Road and Bellefield Avenue.

To accommodate this work, one travel lane and the sidewalk adjacent to the work area may be closed. Traffic restrictions will be removed by 5 p.m. each evening.

Work areas will be covered with steel plates during the day. Work is expected to take two to three weeks.

The University Line Corridor

When construction for the University Line is complete, there will be 24 PRTX stations throughout Downtown, Uptown, and Oakland.

PRT continues to work closely with stakeholders including community groups, universities, businesses, and other impacted groups during construction.

PRTX stations will have new shelters with upgraded amenities, including next-bus arrival screens, fare vending machines, seating, lighting, emergency phones, and security cameras.
