PRT’s contractor is erecting two new shelters for the Steel Plaza PRTX bus station, which is located on Sixth Avenue between Grant and Ross streets, adjacent to Mellon Green.

The new PRTX station will be closed to the public until all components have been tested. Station amenities will include two 60-foot bus shelters, emergency phone, security camera(s), seating, lighting, and real-time arrival signs.

The sidewalk adjacent to Mellon Green will remain closed during shelter installation. The sidewalk opposite the work site and the crosswalks at Grant and Ross streets remain open.

Shelter installation is expected to take several weeks. When installation is complete, the contractor will reduce the size of the fence to allow access to the sidewalk.

Construction fencing is expected to remain in place until summer 2025.

When construction for the University Line is complete, there will be five new PRTX stations in the Downtown Loop.

Sidewalk Demolition to Continue at Sixth Avenue and Wood Street

Last week, PRT’s contractor placed construction fencing on the south side of Sixth Avenue between Liberty Avenue and Wood Street, adjacent to the K&L Gates building.

The contractor is currently removing the existing sidewalks and curb at this location. In the coming weeks, they will place newly expanded sidewalks, granite curbs and accessible ramps.

Traffic has been shifted to the north side of Sixth Avenue. Vehicles travelling on Liberty Avenue can turn right to travel outbound onto Sixth Avenue. Vehicles traveling inbound on Sixth Avenue must turn right or left onto Wood Street.

Last year, the contractor began working on the opposite side of the roadway in front of Wood Street Station. They relocated drainage and electrical infrastructure, placed new expanded sidewalks with new curbs and accessible ramps. Weather permitting, the remaining sidewalk restoration on Liberty Avenue will be completed in the next few weeks.

When construction for the University Line is complete, Wood Street PRTX Station will have a new 30-foot bus shelter with transit amenities adjacent to the K&L Gates building.

New Work Zone Established at Forbes Avenue and McKee Place

Last week, PRT’s contractor placed a large construction fence on Forbes Avenue at McKee Place, where they will be working for the next few months.

The contractor will be working weekdays and Saturdays as needed from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. to install new sidewalks, new curbs, and accessible ramps.

The work zone is on the south side of Forbes Avenue occupying one travel lane and the sidewalk. Vehicle traffic has been shifted to the left or north side of Forbes Avenue.

Pedestrian access will be maintained behind the construction fence. Parking will be maintained on the north side of Forbes Avenue opposite the work site.

The bus stop at Forbes Avenue at McKee Place will be out of service. Riders should instead use the bus stop on Forbes Avenue at Halket Street or Forbes Avenue at Meyran Avenue.

Beginning April 5, vehicles will be unable to make the right turn from Forbes Avenue onto McKee Place while additional roadway restoration is completed. Access will be provided to emergency vehicles only. Work is expected to take a few days. Traffic restrictions will be removed after work is complete.

Construction fencing is expected to remain in place 24/7 until June.

When construction for the University Line is complete, Forbes Avenue at McKee Place will have a new PRTX Station with a 60-foot bus shelter and transit amenities.

Electrical Work to Continue in Uptown and Oakland

PRT’s electrical subcontractor began electrical work on Forbes Avenue in Oakland. Crews are placing underground electrical conduit across the roadway supplying power to the future PRTX stations.

Work will be performed Monday through Friday and will move between the locations listed below over the next few weeks. Work is expected to take between one to two weeks at each location.

The work zones below are all located along Forbes Avenue:

  • Between Schenley Drive and Schenley Drive Extension (9 a.m. to 3 p.m.)
  • Between Craft Avenue and Halket Street (8 a.m. to 4 p.m.)
  • Between Jumonville Street and Birmingham Bridge (8 a.m. to 4 p.m.)
  • Between Diamond Street and Pride Street (7 a.m. to 5 p.m.)

To accommodate this work, one travel lane, and the sidewalk adjacent to the work area may be closed. Traffic restrictions will be removed every evening.

Sewer Inspections and Catch Basin Replacements to Continue on Forbes Avenue in Uptown

PRT’s contractor is inspecting underground drainage infrastructure using CCTV technology in coordination with catch basin replacements in Uptown. There will be three crews working weekdays from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Fifth Avenue between Diamond and Wyandotte streets.

Crews will move between multiple locations within the work zone as work is completed. All drainage infrastructure within the limits of the project along Fifth and Forbes avenues will be inspected before catch basins are replaced.

Work will require a partial lane closure providing access to the manhole and/or catch basin on or near the curb. Traffic restrictions will be removed each night.
